Storytelling with text chat: Handa’s surprise
Students are asked to collaboratively write a story through text chat starting as follows:
"Handa put 7 delicious fruits in a basket for
her best friend Akeyo …"
Group 1
Pre-task
Questions:
Have you
ever read stories before? What kind of stories?
What tense
do we use when writing stories?
What kind
of fruit do you expect Handa was taking to her friend?
Post-task
What
surprised Handa in the story?
What kind
of fruit did Handa take? How? What was her friend’s reaction when she/he saw
the fruit?
Could you
write another similar story for homework.
Group 2
Pre-task
Four
questions:
List types
of fruit that grow in your area? Why do you think people give fruits as gifts?
What do people expect in return from gifts.
Post task
Read each
other’s texts and comments
Write a
similar story of your own , eg about a holiday gift.
Group 3
Took a
different story that is probably familiar to students
Have you
heard the story of a foolish man whose wife cooked a chicken and he goes out to
look for a toothpick in the woods …
Pre-task
Develop the
story together anticipating what may have happened to them when they came back
Post task
Edit your
story, compare your story to the original story you know.
Was it
similar to the story you know?
If students
know the story, the focus is more on language than content.
Group 4
Pre-task
Questions –
have you ever told a story? If so, how do stories usually begin?
Once upon a
time …
How do they
end?
Can you
recall the narrative structure of a story? Who usually creates a story?
Task
Now you’re going to create a story of your own. Here is the story setting …
Now you’re going to create a story of your own. Here is the story setting …
Chat in
groups to make up a story
Post-task
What have
you learnt from your story writing practices? Did you like your story? Are you
ready to share it with others? Compare your story with the original story.
Group 5
Pre-task
What type
of stories do you use? Can you get the type of fruits Handa took to her friend?
How could the story develop? Where do you think Handa took the fruits from?
Post task
What’s the
moral of the story? How do you feel about the story? Do you like it? Can you
write a similar story yourself.
Group 6
Pre-task
Shouldn’t
necessarily begin with questions. Could read a similar story. What tenses are
used in stories?
What kind
of gift would you take to a friend? What fruits are found in your area?
Post-task
Post their
stories on the wall or in the blog and comment each other’s stories.
